How to govern AI without killing momentum

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are now embedded in day-to-day business operations. That genie is not going back in the bottle. The real question for business leaders like you is not  whether your teams are using AI, but how securely and deliberately that use is being governed.


From a Symsafe perspective, as a managed services provider, the risk is not AI itself. The risk is unmanaged information security risk introduced through AI.


Only 5 percent of U.S. executives reported having a mature AI governance program in place, according to a KPMG survey. Nearly half said they plan to establish one, but had not yet done so. That gap between intent and execution is where unmanaged risk, control gaps, and compliance exposure typically emerge.


Used well, AI accelerates productivity and decision-making. Used without governance, it increases operational, legal, and information security risk.


Below are five practical rules we usually recommend to clients who want the benefits of AI while maintaining effective risk management and control alignment.

Why businesses are leaning into AI

Generative AI delivers clear business value. It reduces manual effort, accelerates content creation, summarises complex information, and improves customer support workflows. NIST notes that generative AI can improve decision-making, optimise processes, and support innovation across industries.

In ISO 27001 terms, AI can improve efficiency and effectiveness of business processes. Governance ensures those gains do not come at the expense of confidentiality, integrity, or availability.

Five guidelines for governing AI responsibly

1. Define scope, ownership, and acceptable use
An effective AI policy should clearly define approved use cases, prohibited activities, and accountability. This aligns directly with ISO 27001 requirements for defined scope, roles, and responsibilities.

Without clear boundaries, teams may introduce information security risks unintentionally. With them, staff can innovate confidently within controlled parameters.

2. Maintain human oversight as a control
Generative AI produces persuasive output, not assured accuracy. Human review should be treated as a mandatory control, not an optional step.

AI may assist with drafting, analysis, or automation, but accountability for decisions, communications, and outcomes must remain with people. This also protects intellectual property. The U.S. Copyright Office has confirmed that content generated solely by AI is not copyright-protected. Meaningful human input preserves ownership and intent.

3. Log usage to support monitoring and auditability
If AI usage is not visible, it cannot be governed. Effective AI controls require logging of prompts, users, timestamps, and model versions.

These records support audit requirements, incident response, and continuous improvement. They also allow organisations to assess control effectiveness over time, a core ISO 27001 principle.

4. Apply strict data classification and protection rules
Public AI tools are third-party platforms. Any data entered into them should be treated as externally disclosed unless contractual safeguards are in place.

AI policies should explicitly prohibit the use of confidential, client, or NDA-protected information in public tools. If data is not approved for external sharing, it should not be included in an AI prompt. This directly supports data classification and information handling controls.

5. Treat AI governance as continual improvement
AI governance is not a static document. Tools evolve, threat landscapes change, and regulatory expectations mature.

We recommend scheduled reviews, at least quarterly, to reassess AI usage, update controls, and retrain staff. This aligns with ISO 27001’s requirement for continual improvement and ongoing risk treatment.
